He was awarded his Nidan (2nd degree black belt) by Yoshimitsu Yamada Shihan in 2021.

David Floeter is a dedicated Aikido practitioner whose training spans decades and reflects deep roots in both traditional and evolving lineages of the art. He began his Aikido journey in Oakland, California, where he first developed his foundation and commitment to practice. In 2006, David was awarded the rank of San-dan (third-degree black belt), marking a significant milestone in his early training. His path has been shaped by intentional choices about mentorship and alignment with instructors whose approach reflected his values and technical direction. During his time in Santa Fe, he trained with a longtime friend from his Oakland beginnings, maintaining continuity with his early practice. However, as his understanding of Aikido deepened, he sought out instruction that resonated more closely with his evolving perspective. This led him back to the Bay Area, where he trained under Robert Nadeau, whose teachings emphasize internal awareness, energy, and non-forceful engagement. David has also trained with several highly respected instructors throughout his journey. He spent time practicing with Pat Hendricks, a direct student of Morihiro Saito, further grounding his experience in traditional Iwama-style Aikido. Additionally, he participated in “swap days” training with Frank Doran in Redwood City, and earlier in San Francisco, where a shared dojo environment brought together instructors including Bill Witt, an Iwama stylist, alongside Robert Nadeau. These diverse experiences have allowed David to develop a well-rounded and thoughtful approach to Aikido, integrating multiple lineages while maintaining a strong personal philosophy rooted in respect, adaptability, and continuous learning. He continues to train, teach, and refine his practice, valuing both the technical and relational aspects of Aikido. We are fortunate at San Miguel Aikido to have David with us as our senior weapons instructor.
